Understanding GHS Labeling

Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is the system developed by the United Nations to standardise the classification and labelling of chemicals. The OSHA Justice Of the HazCom 2012 acknowledges GHS, which requires businesses to label hazardous chemicals and have a good Hazard Communication Plan.

The Six Essential Components of a GHS Label

• Signal Word - Provides information on the severity of the risks involved, where the word “Danger" is used to imply a high level of risk and the word "Warning” is used where the level of risk is slightly low.


• GHS Symbols (Hazard Pictograms) – The specific cyclic rectangular-shaped marks denote the hazardous products of their chemistry, physio-chemical and environmental impacts.


• Manufacturer details – This is where the manufacturer's contact details, such as his or her name, company address, and contact details, will be provided.


• Precautionary Statements/First Aid - Offers prevention, response, storage, and disposal guidance.


• Hazard Statements – A statement of the risks admitted in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS).


• Product Name or Identifiers - Specifies the chemical or product name and additional identifying information.

Primary vs. Secondary Containers

Labelling of Primary Containers
Primary packaging can be termed the barrels, bottles, chemical drums, and cans received from manufacturers initially. These containers require that all six aspects of GHS labelling be placed on and should not be subjected to any changes.

Labelling of Secondary Containers
Second containers are used to transfer chemicals; smaller ones like spray bottles and jugs are also needed to carry GHS labels, with some exceptions when the substance is used in the workplace during the shift and stays in the area.
